Cake Fairy Tales

Feb 5 is World Nutella Day – Nutella Popiah for One

Happy World Nutella Day!

I racked my brains last night to decide on a Nutella recipe to make for one. Since the Husband is on a post-CNY detox/workout craze, I couldn’t find it in me to ask him to eat a whole Nutella brownie or cheesecake with me. I was contemplating a single-serving Nutella molten lava recipe, but that just seemed like too much work for one. Cookies? No, thanks. Too much of those during Chinese New Year.

Then inspiration struck in the form of half a pack of spring roll/popiah wrappers leftover from making CNY seaweed crackers.

You need:

  1. 2 medium spring roll wrappers
  2. Egg white, lightly beaten
  3. 2 tbsp Nutella
  4. Oil for frying

How to:

  • Preheat a scant inch of oil to 170 degrees Celcius.
  • Place each wrapper diagonally. On the three corners away from you, brush generously with egg white.
  • On the corner nearest to you, place a tablespoon of Nutella about an inch from the edges. Pick up the corner and fold it over the Nutella. Start to roll away from you, encasing the Nutella in the centre.
  • When you have rolled just over half the wrapper, fold the sides in and continue rolling until the last corner. Repeat.
  • Deep fry until golden brown, about 45 secs. Drain on kitchen towels and serve hot.

Very crispy, warm, oozy, Nutella-ey goodness.

Gone in a total of four perfect bites.

Left me a bit starry-eyed by how good it was, honestly.

Nutella has that effect on some people right?

I’ve never had Nutella but I keep hearing people talk about it. I keep thinking it’s some sort of peanut butter.

You’re right on the nut part! 🙂 It’s a hazelnut chocolate spread. Nutella’s the brand. Pretty sure there are other brands around (not where I live though), but Nutella’s the most famous one I think.
