Life's better with cake and a sprinkle of fairy dust
A power drill can be a girl’s best friend, when it comes to upcycling some dollar-store melamine dinnerware and a cake stand kit from eBay into this sweet-looking 3 tier cake stand.
I love cake stands. They make me want to make pretty little bakes, lay our good tablecloth, brew tea in my best teapot and have friends over.
Most cake stands in Singapore also happen to cost an arm and a leg. When I saw these dishes at the dollar store, I knew right away I wanted to make them into a 3-tiered cake stand. The bowl on top is more than just a whimsical touch. I actually intend to serve little macarons/candies in it. Plus, it’s so much more interesting than having 3 plates in different sizes.
Time taken? 15 minutes. Most of it was spent fiddling on the best way to measure the EXACT centre of each plate/bowl. The partner in crime, my father-in-law, dug out all the rulers, French curves and vernier calipers in the house. After 10 minutes, we decided. Heck, let’s eyeball it. I must congratulate ourselves on an eyeballed job done quite well.
Drilling plastic was strangely exhilarating. After putting little holes though six dishes (we had extras, just in case), I started mentally listing the things (and/or people) I wanted to put a hole through.
The plastic dinnerware cost a total of Sgd1.50 and the kit was less than 4 dollars, with free shipping to boot. The joy of turning a wild idea into reality? Priceless.
